Since their first international in 1914, they have been South American champions 9 times and have produced many of the greatest football stars in history, such as Pelé, Garrincha, Zico or Neymar. Brazil is the only team to have participated in all World Cup tournaments since 1930. Since 1994, Brazil has always reached at least the quarter-finals.

The qualification route

Brazil has had a relatively easy time in CONMEBOL qualifying matches. In a total of 17 matches, there were 14 wins, plus three draws (in Ecuador, in Argentina and in Colombia). Curiously, there is one World Cup qualifier still to be played, against Argentina in September 2022, which will have no bearing on the final standings.

Stars

At the last two World Cups, Neymar (Paris St.Germain) stood above all his peers, but another player, Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr, has since come into the public eye. The potential of great players in Brazil, however, seems inexhaustible: Raphinha (Leeds United), Fabinha (Liverpool FC), Marquinhos (PSG), Lucas Paqueta (Olympique Lyon) or Richarlison (Tottenham Hotspurs) are already scratching their hooves behind the top stars.
With goalkeepers Allisson (Liverpool FC) and Ederson (Manchester City), two goalkeepers have also established themselves in a position that has been a problem zone for Brazil for years.

Coach

Adenor Leonardo Bacchi, known as Tite, has been in charge of the Selecao since 2016 and has thus already been able to hold on for six years, which stands for a high standing in Brazil. After the World Cup, however, it will be the end for Tite. The 61-year-old has averaged 2.45 points in 74 games and lost only 5, most recently to Argentina in the 2021 Copa America final. At the 2018 World Cup, Brazil lost their quarter-final match to Belgium 2-1. His preferred system of play against higher-rated teams is a 4-2-3-1, but Brazil rely on highly variable tactics.

WORLD CUP 2022

At the 2022 World Cup, Brazil will face Group G opponents Serbia, Switzerland and Cameroon in the group stage. At least on paper, this is a doable task and Brazil should be able to prevail relatively easily. (odds 1.11 at e.g. Bet365).

On the other hand, Brazil have often struggled in the past in games where there was a serious stake, including focusing too much on Neymar’s talents in 2014 and 2018, which often overstretched the star. At the 2022 World Cup, Neymar seems to be relieved of some of the pressure, which was already evident in the qualifying phase. The big pressure is off for Neymar, with Vinicius and Raphinha he has new strong congenial teammates.

In a possible round of 16, there could then be a clash with Uruguay, South Korea or Ghana, which should not be a problem (odds 1.44). However, if the opponent is Portugal, it will be a little tighter against the co-favourites – and then a concentrated performance is needed, otherwise it could mean elimination for Brazil.

Will Brazil be world champions?

With odds of currently 5.50 at many sports betting providers such as Bet365, Brazil is the top favourite with the bookmakers. The potential is certainly there, and in the World Cup qualifiers they prevailed with ease – but their only high-level South American rival from Argentina has shown how to tactically hold their own against Brazil. Moreover, despite their superstars, Brazil lack a real goal-scorer in the centre of attack.

Ultimately, as is so often the case, Brazil can only beat themselves.
