The 2022 World Cup Teams – Cameroon (Group G)
Cameroon qualified for a World Cup finals for the first time in 1982. Although they remained undefeated there, the three draws, including against the eventual world champions Italy, were not enough for them to advance to the next round.
In the second qualifying round in 1990, they sensationally reached the quarterfinals, where they lost to England in extra time. Subsequently, Cameroon qualified for 5 further tournaments, but could never live up to expectations and were eliminated in the preliminary round in each case.
The road to qualification
Cameroon was previously seeded for the group stage. There, they faced strong opponents Ivory Coast as well as Mozambique and Malawi in Group D. The only exception was the away match at the end of the tournament. Except for the away match at Ivory Coast, Cameroon managed to win all matches.
In the decisive playoff match, the opponents were Algeria. After losing the first leg at home in Douala (0-1), Cameroon won the second leg in Blida in extra time (2-1).
The stars
Although he has made few international appearances, captain Vincent Aboubakar (Al-Nassr Riyadh) is the biggest star in the indomitable Lions’ team, with FC Bayern’s Eric-Maxime Choupo-Moting alongside him. The driving force in midfield is Napoli’s defensive midfield engine Zambo Anguissa.
Although still without an international cap, expect to see Bryan Mbeumo of Brentford FC, who secured a regular spot in the Premier League and opted against his native France to participate in the World Cup.
Goalkeeper Andre Onana (Inter Milan) is considered the best goalkeeper in Africa.
The coach
After a disappointing performance at the Africa Cup in front of a home crowd, record-breaking national team player Rigobert Song was appointed as the new national coach. With him on the sidelines, qualification for the 2022 World Cup followed immediately.
Song does not have much experience as a coach, but has been active in the country’s youth sector for many years. In all games so far, he has used a 4-4-2 with a double six.

World Cup 2022
At the 2022 World Cup, Cameroon will play in Group G against Brazil, Switzerland and Serbia. Cameroon does not have high hopes of doing better at this World Cup finals than before. Despite their great potential, the Cameroonians have often failed due to their own morale, as was the case at the Africa Cup in their own country.
Too many positions in Rigobert Song’s team are filled by mediocre players. Although Song is still trying to convince some players with Cameroonian roots to switch associations, this will no longer have much influence.
It is unlikely that Cameroon will be able to survive beyond the preliminary round at the 2022 World Cup.
