The Teams at the 2022 World Cup – England (Group B)

England World Cup 2022
England

Although England is the motherland of football, the Three Lions were not a member of FIFA from 1928 to 1946. Therefore, they were not allowed to participate in World Cup qualifiers. In the 19 attempts that followed, the English national team won a ticket to the finals 16 times. They only failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup in Germany, the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and the 1994 World Cup in the USA.

However, England’s national team only reached the semi-finals three times. In 1966, they won their only World Cup in front of their home crowd, and they also finished fourth at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, the Three Lions have played the eventual world champions six times, the most ever. Specifically, it came in the 1958, 1962, 1970, 1986, 1990 and 2002 editions. With Gary Lineker at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico and Harry Kane four years ago, two Englishmen were crowned top scorers.

England coach Gareth Southgate

Gareth Southgate has been on the sidelines of England’s senior national team since autumn 2016. Since then, the 51-year-old has led the Three Lions to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the finals of EURO 2020. Before that, the former centre-back only managed the then Premier League club Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2009 and the England U21 team since the summer of 2013.

The Stars of the English National Team

The England team players earn their money almost exclusively at home. The exceptions are midfield all-rounder Jude Bellingham of Borussia Dortmund and two Italy legionnaires – centre-back Fikayo Tomori of AC Milan and attacker Tammy Abraham of AS Roma. However, Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane, who was top scorer at the 2018 World Cup, and Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling are the other star strikers.

England’s qualification for the 2022 World Cup

England scored 39 goals in Group I of the European World Cup qualifiers and conceded just three. The logical consequence is that the Three Lions took first place with 26 points thanks to eight wins and two draws. They won 2-1 at home and drew 1-1 away against second-placed Poland, who took six points less.

England’s chances of success at the 2022 World Cup

The English national team will initially face Iran, the USA and Wales in Group B at the 2022 World Cup. These selections are ranked 15th, 21st and 21st respectively in the FIFA rankings. On the one hand, this means that England are the clear favourites for first place, and on the other, that the Three Lions will be up against extremely unpleasant teams.

As group winners, England would most likely play Ecuador, Senegal or the hosts Qatar in the round of 16. With the exception of the second-named team, these rivals are well below those in Group B. But for the English selection, basically anything is possible in the knockout phase. And that, of course, especially if Kane builds on his performances at the 2018 World Cup.

England’s statistical features ahead of the 2022 World Cup

So England will face Wales at the 2022 World Cup. The Three Lions have played the Dragons 103 times so far, with 92 of those matches being friendlies. Their last competitive match to date was at EURO 2016 in France and the England national team came out on top 2-1. The Three Lions then celebrated a 3-0 home victory in October 2020.

There have also been eleven encounters with the USA, two of which have taken place at World Cup finals. England drew 0-1 in 1950 and 1-1 in 2010. However, in a friendly match in November 2018, England won 3-0 at home. On the other hand, the English national team has not yet played against Iran.
