The 2022 World Cup Teams (Group F) – Morocco

The Moroccan national team has participated in five World Cups, the first time in 1970 when they became the first African team to participate in a World Cup after World War II.

The Moroccan national team has participated in five World Cups, the first time in 1970 when they became the first African team to participate in a World Cup after World War II.

Their greatest success to date was reaching the round of 16 at the 1986 World Cup, where they were defeated 1-0 by the German national team.

At the 2018 World Cup in Russia, their group opponents Spain, Portugal and Iran ultimately proved too strong. However, the 2:2 in the last match against Spain was a respectable success.

The road to qualification

In CAF qualifying, Morocco was seeded in the first round and faced Guinea-Bissau, Guinea and Sudan in the following group stage. Due to Covid19 restrictions, Morocco was able to play all of their matches on Moroccan soil. In doing so, they won all of those six matches and conceded only one goal.

They then faced the Democratic Republic of Congo in the deciding games for participation in the World Cup, against whom the course was already set with a 4-1 victory in the first leg.

The stars

The team’s most important player is Achraf Hakimi of Paris St.Germain. The right-back has already proven his international class in four top European leagues (for Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, PSG).

In attack, hopes rest on Sevilla FC’s Youssef En-Nesyri and his strike partner there, Munir El-Haddadi. Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech, on the other hand, will miss Morocco after internal disputes.

The coach

Bosnian Vahid Halihodzic has over 30 years of coaching experience. The 70-year-old has coached the national teams of Japan, Algeria and Ivory Coast and has coached at prestigious clubs such as Paris St. Germain, Trabzonspor and FC Nantes.

He has been in charge of Morocco since 2019 and has averaged 2.23 points from 30 games with his team. Between October 2019 and January 2022, Halihodzic remained unbeaten with the Moroccan national team.

He plays a very variable system with frequent changes and a preference for the 4-2-3-1.

Best lineup

Bono (Sevilla FC) – Noussair Mazraoui (FC Bayern Munich), Romain Saiss (Besiktas Istanbul), Nayef Aguerd (West Ham United), Adam Masina (Udinese Calcio) – Soufian Amrabat (AC Florence), Imran Louza (Watford FC) – Achraf Hakimi (Paris St. Germain), Amine Harit (FC Schalke 04), Tarik Tissoudali (AA Gent) – Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla FC).

World Cup 2022

Morocco will face Belgium, Canada and Croatia in Group F at the 2022 World Cup.

They have the most difficult task with the number two in the world ranking, Belgium. It remains to be seen how well Croatia will perform this year – for the internationally very experienced Moroccan team, the duel with the reigning runners-up right at the start of the tournament should be a key game. Against Canada, on the other hand, a win is an absolute must.

Morocco is coming to Qatar with a lot of potential. They have players from Europe’s top leagues in all positions and also have an experienced and internationally recognized coach on the sidelines.

A place in the round of 16, where Spain or Germany will presumably be waiting, would be an enormous achievement. The chances of this happening are perhaps better than you might think.
