The national team of the Netherlands will participate in a World Cup finals for the eleventh time. However, after the 1934 World Cup in France and the 1938 World Cup in France, the “Oranjes” had to wait 36 years for their next participation. However, the Dutch national team reached the finals of both the 1974 World Cup in Germany and the World Cup in Argentina. There they lost to the respective hosts.
After two unsuccessful attempts, they made a comeback at the 1990 World Cup in Italy. It was the first of six appearances in seven finals, with the exception of the 2002 finals in South Korea and Japan. Apart from that, the Netherlands have always reached the knockout stage. The “Oranjes” climbed the podium twice, losing to Spain in the final of the 2010 World Cup and four years later with a victory in the third-place match against the hosts Brazil. Holland then failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
The coach of the Netherlands, Louis van Gaal
Louis van Gaal took over the Netherlands national team for the third time in July 2021. This marked the 70-year-old’s return to a coaching post five years after leaving Manchester United. In his first two eras as Bonds coach, van Gaal saw the team fail to qualify for the 2002 finals and finish third at the 2014 finals. Van Gaal has also been on the sidelines in Holland at Ajax Amsterdam and AZ Alkmaar, twice at Barcelona and at Bayern between 2009 and 2011.
The stars of the Dutch national team
Most of the Dutch team players earn their money primarily in the top European leagues. These include centre-backs Virgil van Dijk of English Champions League finalists Liverpool and Matthijs de Ligt of Italian giants Juventus. In addition, van Dijk will captain Holland on the pitch. We would also like to highlight central midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who earns his money in the Spanish La Liga with Barcelona.
The Netherlands’ qualification for the 2022 World Cup
Holland finished first in Group G of the European World Cup qualifiers with 23 points after seven wins, two draws and one defeat. The “Oranjes” thus clinched a direct ticket to the finals in Qatar. Against second-placed Turkey, who took two points less, the Netherlands suffered a 2-4 away defeat and a 6-1 home win.
The Netherlands’ chances of success at the 2022 World Cup
The Netherlands will first face the hosts Qatar, Ecuador and Senegal in Group A at the 2022 World Cup. The “Oranjes” are the heavy favourites for first place, with the Senegalese national team as the first opponent and the most promising rival. After that, anything is possible for the Dutch national team, especially all the way to a place in the final.
Statistical features of the Netherlands ahead of the 2022 World Cup
At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, the Dutch national team will play the hosts Qatar and the newly crowned African champions Senegal for the first time ever. Holland, on the other hand, played two friendly matches against Ecuador. The Netherlands drew 1-0 at home in March 2006 and 1-1 in May 2014.
