The 2022 World Cup Teams Group A – Qatar

Qatar World Cup 2022
Qatar

Qatar is hosting its first World Cup in 2022. Strictly speaking, this will be their second appearance at a global event. The al-Anabbi, or the Wine Reds, took part in the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. There they were eliminated after the preliminary round. Even before the World Cup was awarded at home in December 2010, the Emirate invested heavily in further footballing development. The title at the 2019 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates is their greatest success to date.

Qatar coach Félix Sánchez

Spaniard Félix Sánchez Bas has been on the sidelines of the Qatar senior national team since July 2017. Prior to that, the 46-year-old first worked at Barcelona’s Cantera from 1996 to 2006. He then moved to Qatar, where he initially worked in the Aspire Academy and with the U19 and U23 teams.

The stars of the Qatar national team

All the players in the Qatari national team are under contract in their home country. Of the three main footballers, two, strikers Akram Afif and Hassan Al-Haydos, play for Al-Sadd. In addition, another attacking player, Almoez Ali of Al-Duhail, is among the stars.

Qatar’s qualification for the 2022 World Cup

As the host of the 2020 World Cup Qatar did not have to qualify. The desert state on the Arabian Peninsula only gained independence from Great Britain in 1971. After that, the football federation refrained from participating in the qualifiers for the 1974 World Cup, after which there were eleven unsuccessful attempts. In the qualifiers for the 2010 to 2018 World Cups, the al-Anabbi had no chance in the final phase before the play-offs.

Qatar’s chances of success at the 2022 World Cup

Especially since Félix Sánchez Bas took over the Qatari national team, things have been consistently on the up for the Wine Reds. Since the promotion of the 46-year-old Spaniard, they have experienced 41 wins, 14 draws and 23 defeats in 78 international matches. This included a 1-0 win in Switzerland in November 2018. Nevertheless, on paper Qatar have no chance against the Netherlands and Senegal in particular. We would also put Ecuador above them. South Korea did advance to the semi-finals at the 2002 World Cup as co-hosts, but had more international experience.

Statistical features of Qatar ahead of the 2022 World Cup

The Qatari team played two test matches against unqualified European teams in March. They scored 2-1 against 73rd-ranked Bulgaria and 0-0 against 68th-ranked Slovenia. The hosts will also face the Netherlands and Senegal for the first time at the 2022 World Cup. On the other hand, they managed a 4-3 home win over Ecuador in October 2018.
