Expert analysis Real Madrid

Real Madrid experienced their most recent two draws in the La Liga at the end of February and early March. Here, Carlo Ancelotti’s side recorded a 1-1 in the derby against the third-placed Atlético Madrid and a 0-0 at the sixth-ranked Betis Sevilla.

Since then, in 13 Primera División appearances, the Blancos saw eight victories and five defeats. The first of these occurred on 19 March in the Clásico with a 1-2 at the champions FC Barcelona. Immediately before and afterwards, they managed at home a 3-1 against the second-bottom RCD Espanyol and a 6-0 against the third-bottom Real Valladolid. Then, Real Madrid, with a 2-3 loss to the fifth-placed Villarreal, dropped points for the only time in their last seven appearances at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu.

In the next four league matches, the second-placed team won three times against sides that rank in the second half of the table. The exception, a 2-4 at the ninth-placed Girona, happened between two 2-0 in Cádiz plus against Celta Vigo and a 4-2 against Alméria.

Afterwards, Real Madrid first recorded away defeats against the fourth-ranked Real Sociedad (0-2) plus the 15th-placed Valencia (0-1) and a 1-0 home win against the 14th-placed Getafe. Then, May ended with two 2-1 in the home derby against the tenth-placed Rayo Vallecano and at the eleventh-ranked Sevilla FC on Sunday.

Expert analysis Athletic Bilbao

Athletic Bilbao collected 13 of their 50 points in Spain’s La Liga table from the 26th to the 30th matchday. In that period, Ernesto Valverde’s side dropped points exclusively in a 0-0 home draw against Getafe on 1 April. Afterwards, the Leones threaded a 2-1 at RCD Espanyol, a 2-0 in a Basque regional derby against Real Sociedad and a 2-1 at Almería. There, Iñigo Martínez played his last LaLiga game so far.

Following the injury to the defence stalwart, Athletic Bilbao lost five of their last seven Primera División appearances. The first exception, a 1-1 at the twelfth-placed RCD Mallorca, was sandwiched between two 0-1 defeats to Sevilla FC and Betis Sevilla. Then, Athletic Bilbao slid to a 1-5 debacle at Villarreal. There, the second standard centre-back, Yeray Álvarez, played for the only time in the last five rounds.

On 20 May, the Leones returned to the winning track with a 2-1 against Celta Vigo. However, this was only a flash in the pan. Because: Athletic Bilbao most recently lost 0-2 at seventh-ranked Osasuna and most notably on Sunday 0-1 at home against the last-placed Elche, who were relegated weeks ago.
